On the evening of October 25, 2011, three BGCSTC Club members participated in the first session of Reading for Success. Introduced by Dr. Dorothy Young and with generous support from Boeing, Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County re-launched a comprehensive reading program for students age 6-18.

The program was recognized for its initial success by the St. Charles Journal in 2012, and six years later it is still going strong. Under the direction of retired teacher and speech coach, Tim Horton, the Reading for Success program at the BGCSTC St. Charles Unit marks six years of reading progress for over 600 Club participants.

Reading for Success utilizes an individualized Virtual Reading Coach software through MindPlay. As the backbone of the reading program, students work at their own pace to learn phonics training, fluency and reading comprehension. In addition to time spent on the computer, members also read stories silently or together in groups.

Wednesday, October 25, 2017, Reading for Success participants from the St. Charles Unit gathered to celebrate with a cake reception. Dominique, Autumn, and Aubree, the first Club members to participate six years ago, were recognized for graduating from the program. All three continue to volunteer in the Reading Center as peer tutors.

Under the leadership of the Club’s CEO, Linda Sanchez, and Jeanette Koechner, Director of Community Development, the Reading for Success program received six new software licenses so more members may participate. It is the goal of BGCSTC that at least 60% of Club members read at or above grade level by the end of 2018.
